Text: Luke 13:10-13Subject: “Straighten Up and Fly Right”
10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, "Woman, you are set free from your infirmity." 13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.
Introduction: This is a familiar saying that says, “Straighten up and fly right.” (purpose of the sermon) Today I want to encourage each of us who is not doing as we should do, to straighten up and walk right. Suffering can be a great equalizer.
I. The Attack of Satan (11,16) ¨ Satan’s job is to attack the children of God ¨ Satan will attack us physically and in other areas of our lives ¨ He attacked her physically (illustrate by walking bent over) ¨ Example of this can be seen in the life of Job ¨ John 10:10, “The thief cometh not for but to steal, kill and destroy, but I am come that they may have life and have it more abundantly.”
II. The Attendance of the Woman (11) ¨ In spite of the attack she was at worship ¨ She indicated that she had a desire to worship
III. The Attention of Christ (12,13a) ¨ One important truth…JESUS CAN SEE! ¨ Our faithfulness will draw the attention of Christ ¨ Our commitment will draw the compassionate attention of Christ
