Text: Matthew 5:13; 28:19-20 Title: “Out of the Salt Shaker & Into the World”
Introduction: Rebecca Manley Pippert wrote a book entitled: “Out of the Saltshaker and Into the World.” Mrs. Pippert is one of the foremost communicators in terms of sharing the gospel. She treats evangelism as a way of life. And it should be. The purpose of this message is to communicate what salt has to do with us being a Christian and a disciple of Christ. This text is embedded within the context of Jesus’ “Sermon or Teaching on the Mount.”
I. The Disciples’ Character ~ Salt · Believers are called and designed (made) to be the salt of the earth. · Distinctive – different from the food or object upon which it is put. Believers are to be different from the world. James teaches that we are to be unspotted from the world. · Salt preserves – Keeps things from going bad and decaying. · Salt penetrates – inserts a new quality, substance and life. Changes that upon which it is put. · Salt flavors – it influences the taste of things. · Salt is quiet – it is visible, but it works silently, no noise whatsoever during its work.
II. The Disciples’ Place/Mission to Salt – the earth · Salt is of no use being stored up · Notice that it said the earth, not heaven. Heaven has no need for salt. · Our mission alone – the disciples’ mission alone, not the unbeliever – Jesus said, “Ye are…”
III. The Disciples’ Danger · If it does not serve its purpose it is good for nothing; if it is mixed with dirt, it is useless; if it gets wet, it is useless.
Conclusion: Come out of the salt shaker. “A dash will do…” A dash of love, joy, peace, of Jesus etc… :
