Romans 5:8

A Father Who Cares

Introduction Time Magazine published article that cites statistics that state: "In the U.S., more than half of divorced fathers lose contact with their kids within a few years." It further states, "According to a 1994 study by the Children's Defense Fund, men are more likely to default on a child-support payment (49%) than a used-car payment (3%)." Finally, the article notes, "Even fathers in intact families spend a lot less time focused on their kids than they think: in the U.S. fathers average less than an hour a day (up from 20 minutes a few decades ago), usually squeezed in after the workday." An estimated 24.7 million children (36.3%) live absent their biological father. --. Source: National Fatherhood Initiative, Father Facts, (3rd Edition)

The purpose of this sermon is to paint a picture of a father who really cares.  Further, the purpose is to show us what real love is.

I.                  Demonstration of Love

·        The word commended means to demonstrate, show or prove

·        That is, he hath manifested it, which was before hid in his heart; he has given clear evidence of it, a full proof and demonstration of it; he has so confirmed it by this instance, that there is no room nor reason to doubt it.

·        Did you hear about the guy who says to his girlfriend,
“I’d climb the highest mountain for you,
“I’d swim the deepest ocean,
“I’d give my very life for you”
She says, “Oh, honey, that’s so wonderful. But what I really need is for you to take out the trash".

And he says, “Are you kidding? Now you’re just trying to take advantage of me!”

Talk is cheap. Action requires true commitment.

II.               Liberation in Love

·        While we were yet sinners.

·        While we separated from God.

·        While we were an enemy of God.

·        While we were missing the mark.

III.           Invitation from Love

·        Christ died for us

Conclusion:  When & where did this demonstration take place; when & where did this liberation take place; when & where did this invitation take place?  I am so glad you asked!  It took place one Friday evening on his way to Calvary.

Illustration: There were two brothers who received invitations to go to a birthday party.  The brothers tossed it back and forth if they would go or not.  So, one brother decided to go and the other decided not to.  When the one brother who attended the party returned, he told the other brother he missed it.  He spoke about all the benefits he received and what joy it was to be there.  In fact, he said it was worth accepting the invitation.  One brother was happy and the other was sad.  You don’t have leave here sad today!  The invitation is still extended!  Come on to Jesus.
